Inspector credentials, in plain English
Environmental inspection has half a dozen acronyms and four different licensing bodies. Here's what each means and which ones we require for each Canary service.
The credentials
CIH — Certified Industrial Hygienist
Issued by the American Board of Industrial Hygiene (ABIH). Requires an accredited bachelor's degree, four years of full- time industrial hygiene practice, and passing a comprehensive exam covering toxicology, biohazards, IAQ, sampling methods, and risk assessment. Re-certification every five years. Gold standard for any complex IAQ + mold investigation.
CIEC — Council-certified Indoor Environmental Consultant
Issued by the American Council for Accredited Certification (ACAC). Requires documented IAQ practice + exam. Common in residential mold + IAQ work. Frequently paired with state mold-inspector licenses where states require them (FL, NY, TX, LA).
CMI — Certified Mold Inspector
Issued by the National Organization of Remediators and Mold Inspectors (NORMI) or by IICRC under the AMRT designation (Applied Microbial Remediation Technician). Focused specifically on mold sampling and reading sample results.
EPA Lead Renovator (RRP) + Risk Assessor
EPA-issued under TSCA §402/406. Risk Assessor is the credential to actually sample lead in dust + paint; Renovator is the credential to disturb lead-containing surfaces during renovation. Most lead inspectors hold both. Required by federal law for lead sampling in residential properties built before 1978.
State inspector licenses
Several states require separate state-issued licenses for mold (FL, LA, MD, NY, TX), lead (most states), and home inspection (40 states). Canary verifies the state license number against the issuing board during onboarding; the verification date is recorded on the inspector's profile.
EPA-certified lead labs (NLLAP)
Not an inspector credential — a lab credential. Lead samples must go to a lab accredited under the National Lead Laboratory Accreditation Program. Canary lab partners all hold NLLAP.
AIHA-LAP environmental microbiology accreditation
Lab credential for mold + IAQ analysis. Canary lab partners hold this.
ELAP (Environmental Laboratory Accreditation Program)
State-issued lab credential for drinking water testing (also required for PFAS analysis under EPA Method 537.1 / 533). Canary water-testing labs hold ELAP or the state equivalent.

How we verify
- Credential number lookups. Each credential is verified against the issuing body's directory at onboarding and again annually.
- State license verification. Where the state maintains a public license search (most states do for inspectors and contractors), we check status + expiration.
- Liability insurance certificate. On file and renewed annually. Inspectors can't take bookings if their COI is expired.
- Business Associate Agreement (BAA). Signed at onboarding under HIPAA §164.504(e). Acknowledgment timestamp is on the inspector profile.
- HIPAA training acknowledgment. Either an existing current certificate or our 25-minute module.
What inspectors do NOT need
- A clinical credential. Inspectors sample. Providers sign LMNs. We don't blur the line.
- A remediation credential. Inspection and remediation are separate disciplines. Some inspectors hold IICRC-MR or AMRT for remediation, but it's not required for sampling.
