IRS PUBLICATION 502

Your inspection may be FSA/HSA eligible

The IRS allows home environmental inspections as a medical expense — when paired with a signed Letter of Medical Necessity from a licensed provider. Canary handles both in one workflow.

What qualifies under IRS Publication 502

Professional mold and air quality inspections

When ordered as part of diagnosing or treating a respiratory or allergy-related condition.

Mold remediation and environmental cleanup

Remediation costs are eligible if medically necessary, documented by a provider.

Medical-grade air purifiers and filtration

Devices prescribed for asthma, COPD, or allergies are considered medical equipment.

Radon, lead, VOC, and combustion gas testing

Exposure identification that directly informs a treatment plan qualifies as a medical expense.

The key requirement: a signed Letter of Medical Necessity (LMN) from a licensed healthcare provider connecting your symptoms to the inspection. Without an LMN, the expense is generally not reimbursable.
